I use the iOS Google Maps app on a fairly regular basis for several tasks. It functions fairly well as a GPS knockoff while driving if you have a copilot with
you, and is great for giving more precise directions to others than memory is. One issue some have had with it is trying to figure out what direction you face in relation to the map displayed (being an Eagle Scout doesn’t guarantee that you’ll know what direction North is). Thanks to a very helpful tip from OSX Daily that’s no longer an issue.
The solution is extremely easy: launch the Maps app and tap the Arrow icon on the lower left of the screen to show your current location. When the app has pinpointed your position tap the arrow again and the icon shines out a small beam like a flashlight. This beam shines towards the top of the image from the icon on the map representing your location and the direction you are currently facing. As you move the map will automatically rotate to represent what direction you face.
This allows you to quickly gain your bearings, and get a better understanding how to reach your destination. One caveat: Google Maps relies on a data connection via wifi or cellular signal and the location service in iOS; if either are unavailable the app won’t function.
