Courtesy of Mac Rumors I’ve fallen prey to the siren song of yet another clever
iPad accessory. I’ve been a big proponent of iPad Bluetooth keyboards, especially my current favorite, the Zagg Folio keyboard/case combo, but thanks to Logitech I may be buying again soon.
Logitech’s Solar Keyboard Folio states its competitive advantage in its name-
the bluetooth keyboard is recharged by solar cells built into the unit, capable of keeping the batteries charged indoors or out. Just like the Zagg Folio the keyboard is paired with a case, but again the Solar Keyboard Folio has an advantage over the Zagg Folio- the Solar Folio’s origami-like construction provides two positions for your iPad, one exposing the keyboard and a second shallower angle for better viewing and touchscreen use (conveniently hiding the keyboard). Unlike my current Zagg the Solar Folio activates the iPad’s instant sleep/wake function first demonstrated by Apple’s Smart Cover.
I haven’t had a chance yet to get my hands on a model yet, so I can’t compare the sturdiness of the Solar Folio to the Zagg. The Zagg Folio’s case does offer good protection, but I tend to favor hard cases over soft so I have a slight bias. Logitech’s offering does have one notable drawback- the price. The Solar Folio lists for $129.99 at Logitech’s website, where the Zagg Folio has a list price of $99 (and has been placed on sale recently- I bought mine with a 20% off code).
I’m looking forward both to getting some hands-on time with the Solar Folio and to the continuing innovation new products like this always spawn. Not having to plug in the Bluetooth keyboard gives an accessory a huge advantage in my eyes.
